Alcaraz Distances Himself from Djokovic-Backed PTPA Lawsuit
Tennis Star Unaware of Legal Action
Tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz has expressed his surprise and disapproval of the recent lawsuit filed by the Professional Tennis Players' Association (PTPA) against the sport's governing bodies. The young star, speaking to reporters, stated he was completely unaware of the legal action until he saw it on social media.
Adding to his bewilderment, Alcaraz discovered that his words from a previous press conference were included in the legal documents without his knowledge or consent. "It was surprising for me because no one had told me about it," Alcaraz stated, according to Reuters. He further emphasized his lack of support, saying, "I honestly don’t support that letter because I wasn’t aware of it."
PTPA Targets Tennis' Governing Bodies
The PTPA, co-founded by Novak Djokovic, has launched a significant legal challenge against the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA. The lawsuit alleges monopolization of the sport and disregard for player interests, focusing on key areas such as prize money, rankings, scheduling, and player image compensation. Twelve players, including Vasek Pospisil and Nick Kyrgios, are listed as plaintiffs in the US lawsuit, which seeks a jury trial. Further legal battles are expected in the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Governing Bodies Vow to Defend Their Position
The ATP and WTA have responded strongly to the lawsuit, expressing their dissatisfaction and vowing to "vigorously" defend their positions. The ITIA and ITF are also reviewing the filings and preparing their responses.
Alcaraz Remains Neutral on Specific Issues
While acknowledging some agreement with certain PTPA concerns, Alcaraz ultimately distanced himself from their chosen course of action. "There are things I agree with and there are other things I don’t agree with," the world No. 3 admitted. "Anyway, the main thing is I don’t support what was done.”
Alcaraz, the 2022 Miami Open champion, now turns his attention back to the court, where he faces David Goffin in his opening match of this year's tournament.
